As tastes and current theological ides have evolved, these representations have changed dramatically.

Angels have been shown with small wings, huge wings, or no wings at all, as armoured warriors, beautiful young men or chubby cherubs. Sometimes with halos, sometimes with jewelled crowns.

The purpose of this research was to concentrate on how angels described in biblical texts have been depicted over the centuries. From the angels of creation to those of the apocalypse, no significant event in the Christian religion has taken place without an attending angel.

Together with the angelic representations, much symbolism has evolved around these texts and I also wanted to look at the shapes and patterns of these symbols and the messages they convey, from flaming swords, annunciation lilies, the cup of salvation to the trumpet of the last judgement. Were I to begin again, I would narrow down my field and concentrate on just one of these messages.
