I experimented with taking rubbings from embossed wallpaper onto paper and fabric, block printing and appliqué onto silks and velvets.

In addition to the traditional goldwork materials, I sampled with different weights of metal cans, foils and puree tubes, pieces of wire, metal wick holders from nightlights, melted sequin waste as well as beads, threads and traditional metal thread materials.

The final design was a square box 21cm x 21cm x 15cm constructed from padded and covered card pieces with a hinged lid.

The feet, which were made from an old wooden coat rack, stained and rubbed with gold wax are 3cms high and screw into the base.

I finally decided to use crowns and halos as motifs for the fabric design.

These were cut out of dyed silk dupion, bonded to the background and embellished with metal thread embroidery using leather, various purls, beads, sequins, rick-rack and net.

Areas of focus were padded to give further texture and interest. The padded lining was made from dyed silk velvet.

The materials for this box were £56.92 and the labour was 170 hours.
