Metallic Thread Item
The brief for this item was to design a workbox to contain embroidery tools, samples and materials for goldwork embroidery.
I decided to base the design for the workbox on the architecture of churches and cathedrals, which had played a large part of my research for design.
The embroidery on the box was all to be done by hand, and should reflect both a traditional and modern approach to metal threadwork.
Sample designs were taken from floor tiles, arches, stained glass, and relicquy boxes, and some alternative shapes for the workbox were considered, including a round box based on rose windows and a dome topped chest based on Norman arches.
These were eventually discounted as the requirement was for a rigid box and it was felt that these shapes would have been too complicated to make up to a professional standard.
