Large Scale Item

The brief for this item was to take the theme from my research for design, which was angels, and explore further the theme of angels as messengers and protectors, particularly looking at the most well known messages of all, those of the annunciation and the birth of the baby Jesus.

With the idea of birth and motherhood in mind, I wanted to combine letters, envelopes and ephemera of my own mother's and grandmother's to create an item of memories and messages, possibly a message board, possibly a hanging.

I investigated various designs for a message board, creating richly coloured dyed velvets, and faded worn ones with scrim, gesso, teabag paper and paper maché.

Additionally, I experimented with devoré, discharge paste, and vanishing muslin. I also wrapped wire to make paperclips and covered map pins with stitched fragments.
